FLORENCE — Three men have been arrested and up to five more could face charges related to the reported rape of a UNA student over the weekend, authorities said today.
Among those arrested are University of North Alabama football players Deandrea Alexander Harrison, 19, Rivers Hall, Room 602, UNA, and Eddrick Harris, 19, Rivers Hall, Room 624. Both are charged with first-degree rape and are being held in jail with bail set at $50,000, officials said.
The players have been suspended from the football team, pending the outcome of the criminal case.
Also arrested on the same charge is D'Anthony Juqua Byrd, 19, 409 Euclid Ave., Muscle Shoals. He has posted bail.
First-degree rape is a Class A felony.
Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital offcials called UNA police Sunday morning while treating a female student who reported being raped at Rivers Hall on Saturday night, campus police said.
Rivers Hall is a coed dormitory at UNA.
Campus Police Chief Bob Pastula said the woman was assaulted by multiple men after one of them "coaxed her into his dorm room." The student was taken to the hospital by friends following the assault.
Pastula said additional charges could be filed in the case.
"We're still taking statements and interviewing witnesses," Pastula said.
Harrison, a defensive lineman from Georgia, played in UNA's opening game against Miles College but was injured. Harris, from Courtland, played linebacker and defensive back in 10 games last season.
