A candidate on both sides

THE ISSUE

With GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney shifting positions so often, voters can be sure of only one thing about him.

Who is Mitt Romney?

We understand that, especially in Alabama, many have no use for President Barack Obama. It would be helpful, though, if Romney would quit switching positions long enough for voters to understand how he would run the nation.

The problem was evident last week. In a national broadcast Wednesday, Romney was asked whether he had empathy for citizens who lack his advantages.

"Don't forget, I got everybody in my state insured," Romney said, referring to a Massachusetts law nearly identical to Obamacare. "One hundred percent of the kids in our state had health insurance. I don't think there's anything that shows more empathy and care about the people of this country than that kind of record."

Less than an hour later, he was speaking to a crowd of supporters.

"I will repeal Obamacare and replace it with real health care reform," he said. "You see, Obamacare is really Exhibit No. 1 of the president's political philosophy, and that is that government knows better than people how to run your lives."

Romney has taken both sides of nearly every issue. All voters can be sure of is that he really, really wants to be president.
