HAMILTON — Hamilton completed a perfect regular season Thursday night as the Aggies rolled to a 26-6 victory over Haleyville.
It is the third undefeated regular season in the past five years for the Aggies (10-0), who also accomplished the feat in 2008 and 2010.
Hamilton quarterback Mitch
Stults became the state’s all-time leader in all-purpose yardage in the win.
Needing 150 yards to break the record, Stults threw for 142 yards and a touchdown and added 88 yards rushing and another score to spark the Aggies to the victory.
The Aggies took the opening kickoff and marched 68 yards in 15 plays. Stults capped the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run and Hamilton led 7-0 with 4:16 to go in the first quarter.
After forcing a Haleyville punt on a three-and-out, Hamilton was on the move again, this time driving 45 yards in six plays. Quinton May scored the touchdown on a 3-yard run to increase the Hamilton lead to 14-0 early in the second quarter.
Hamilton extended the margin to 20-0 late in the second quarter when Stults found Jessie Box for a 30-yard touchdown pass.
Haleyville (7-3) was held to just 31 yards of total offense in the first half.
The Lions finally got their offense going midway through the third
quarter after recovering a Hamilton fumble. Quarterback Tanner Ivey scored on a 1-yard run to cut the margin to 20-6.
Hamilton, however, quickly answered with a 55-yard scoring march. May capped the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run that made it 26-6 with 3:42 left in the third quarter.
That would be all the scoring as Hamilton’s defense held the Lions to 167 yards of total offense. Ivey completed 15 of 32 passes for 168 yards, but Haleyville finished with negative 1 yard rushing.
Hamilton will host Colbert County in the Class 3A playoffs next Friday. Haleyville will travel to J.O. Johnson for a Class 4A playoff game.
