Ashland police chief's wife charged in his shooting

ASHLAND (AP) — Authorities have charged the wife of Ashland's police chief with attempted murder after he was wounded by a gunshot.

Officials told WBRC-TV that Police Chief Benny Davis was off duty Saturday when he was shot in the chest.

The Anniston Star reported that Davis' wife was taken into custody and was being held at the Randolph County Jail. Randolph County sheriff's Chief Deputy Billy Lane said 42-year-old Felecia Davis is charged with attempted murder. It wasn't known early today whether she has an attorney.

Ashland Mayor Larry Fetner said Monday that Davis remained in the hospital but was making improvements. Fetner added that Davis had opened one eye and his blood pressure was more stable.

The mayor also says the bullet is still lodged in the chief's back.
