Justin Pennington doubled home a run in the top of the fifth to break a 2-all tie and Central held on for a 3-2 victory over Sheffield on Tuesday on the second day of the TimesDaily Classic baseball tournament.
Each team scored one run in the first inning and one run in the third. Pennington, who drove in all three Central runs, then doubled home the go-ahead run.
Central (2-0) held Sheffield (1-1) scoreless over the final three innings to earn the win.
Peyton Stracener allowed two hits and struck out seven to earn the win for Central. Pennington worked the final inning, allowing one hit and recording one strikeout to get the save.
Murphy Harrison had one hit, two stolen bases and scored two runs for Central.
Eric Yarbrough had a double and two runs scored for Sheffield.
Mars Hill 5, Muscle Shoals 4: Mars Hill scored two unearned runs in the top of the seventh and held on to beat Muscle Shoals.
The Panthers led 3-0 after four innings before Muscle Shoals scored one run in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead. Brady Binion singled to lead off the seventh for Mars Hill and Thomas Burrows walked. Both came around to score on a Muscle Shoals error.
J.T. Hudson pitched three innings in relief to earn the win for Mars Hill (2-0). Burrows allowed one hit and struck out 11 in pitching the first four innings.
Colby Smith had two hits, including a double and drove in two runs for the Panthers. Ryan Ware and Brantley Dover had two hits each for the Trojans(1-2).
Deshler 10, Rogers 0: Taylor Gross tossed a one-hitter to lead Deshler to a five-inning victory over Rogers.
Gross recorded 11 strikeouts and did not issue a walk.
Tucker Norwood led Deshler (2-1) with three hits, including a double and a triple, and three RBIs. Thomas Milstead and Will Davis each added two hits, including a double for the Tigers.
Deshler 10-7, Lexington 7-10: Justin Cantrell hit a three-run homer and finished with two hits and four RBIs to spark Deshler past Lexington in the first game of a doubleheader Monday.
J.T. Thompson added three hits and two RBIs for the Tigers, while Gross had two hits. Joe McIlwain earned the win in relief and T.J. Riner picked up the save.
In the second game, Daniel Grisham led Lexington with three hits. Brandon Putman, Seth Hill and Joshua Howard each had two hits for the Golden Bears.
Regular season
Colbert County 6, Colbert Heights 1: Colbert County broke open a pitcher’s duel with three runs each in the sixth and seventh innings to take a victory over Colbert Heights.
The game was scoreless through five innings before the Indians scored three runs in the top of the sixth. They then scored three more times in the top of the seventh to make it 6-0. Colbert Heights got one run back in the bottom of the seventh but it wasn’t enough.
Alex Vanderford pitched a complete-game two-hitter for Colbert County (3-0), striking out 13. Jordan Bennett and Collin King each had a double in the victory.
Prep Basketball
Collinwood 65, Wayne County 57, 3 OT: It took three extra periods but Collinwood finally put away Wayne County to win the Tennessee boys District 12-A tournament.
Wayne County outscored the Trojans 10-2 in the fourth period to send the game to overtime. Collinwood finally pulled away in the third overtime when Tucker Robertson scored all five of his points.
Hunter Andrews finished with 20 points and Logan Montgomery had 18 to lead the Trojans (19-8). Sawyer Ray paced Wayne County with 16, followed by Carson Kelly with 14, Jalen Bevis with 11 and Zac Risner with 10.
Collinwood will host Santa Fe in the regional tournament Saturday, while Wayne County will host Culleoka.
Boys Soccer
Athens 1, Muscle Shoals 0: Athens scored the game’s only goal in the 64th minute to take an area victory over Muscle Shoals. The loss dropped the Trojans to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in area play.
Despite the loss, Muscle Shoals got a good game from defenders Weston Allen and Landon Letsinger and goalie Ryan Williams.
