CENTRAL HEIGHTS — Central rolled up 512 yards on the ground and steadily pulled away from Colbert Heights for a 46-14 victory in the regular-season finale for both teams Thursday night.
Demarcio McCoy rushed for 114 yards and three touchdowns and Murphy Harrison had 131 yards and one TD to pace Central (7-3), which will host North Jackson next Friday in a Class 4A playoff opener. The Wildcats led 19-7 at the half and outscored Colbert Heights (2-8) 27-7 in the third and fourth quarters.
Central coach Heath Wood said his team did a great job pulling together this season.
“Our seniors have done a great job with their leadership on and off the field,” he said. “Everybody worked hard in the offseason to make this a successful season. We had a bunch of young guys step up and take on big roles. Now, we’re looking forward to the playoffs.”
Cole Claunch passed for 288 yards and two scores for Colbert Heights.
Kyle Duncan opened the scoring for Central with a 14-yard run. After Colbert Heights tied it on a 7-yard TD pass from Claunch to Dylan Marlar, Central scored 27 unanswered points.
Dylan Hogue scored on a 1-yard run and McCoy had TD runs of 5 and 6 yards as the lead went to 27-7 in the third quarter. Harrison closed out the 27-point run bolting 52 yards for a score.
Claunch’s second TD pass, a 15-yard strike to Adam Hunter closed the gap to 34-14. McCoy answered almost immediately with a 70-yard run. Clay Chapin closed out the scoring for Central with a 7-yard run.
