Collinwood girls advance to state tournament

Collinwood’s girls basketball team is headed to the Elite Eight tournament in Murfreesboro (Tenn.) for the first time since 2008.

Sparked by a 20-point effort by Alexis Haddock, Collinwood dropped Moore County 41-28 on Saturday nigh to advance to the Class A state tournament.

The Trojans last played in the Elite Eight in 2008 when Abby Andrews was named Miss Basketball.

Collinwood (24-7) led from the start against Moore County (30-5) and snapped the Raiders’ 14-game winning streak.

Haddock scored six points in the first quarter to help the Trojans to a 12-5 lead. She completed her night’s work by hitting 7 of 8 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Other teams qualifying for the state tournament are: Cloudland, Hampton, Clarkerange, Jackson County, Summertown, Union City and Madison Academy Magnet. Brackets will be drawn today.

Softball

Wilson finishes 1-3: Wilson beat East Lawrence 5-2 and lost three one-run games in the Hatton Invitational.

Tiffany McIntyre’s two-run home run highlighted the win against East Lawrence, while Madison Daniel and Jennifer Schroeder each had two hits. Maria Mask earned the win.

Mars Hill (2-3) handed Wilson two losses, both in tiebreakers. Mallory Spurlock pitched a two-hitter as the Panthers dropped Wilson 1-0 early Saturday. Schroeder had a double and Hannah Arnett had a single for Wilson’s only hits.

The Panthers eliminated Wilson with a 3-2 win in a tiebreaker. Mask had an RBI single for the Warriors.

Hatton beat Wilson 2-1 Friday. Kendra Smith scored for Wilson on a sacrifice fly by Schroeder.

Baseball

Mars Hill 10, Colbert Heights 0: Colby Smith had two hits and drove in three runs to lead Mars Hill to a run-rule win in five innings.

Brandon Krieger added two hits and two RBIs and, like Smith, drove in a run during a four-run first inning for the Panthers (6-3).

Sam Abernathy got the win, allowing four hits and striking out on while pitching all five innings.

Sheffield 9, Clements 1: Sheffield scored six runs in the sixth inning to break open a close game in a victory over Clements in the Sheffield Invitational.

Ben Gregory picked up the win, tossing a complete game three-hitter with six strikeouts.

Austin Tippett led the way at the plate for the Bulldogs with two hits and three RBIs while B.K. Yarbrough had two hits and an RBI for Sheffield (7-4)

UNA softball

West Florida sweeps Lions: North Alabama (13-5) dropped its first two Gulf South Conference games, falling at West Florida 11-6 and 5-4 on Saturday.

Dani Colwill had four hits for the Lions in the doubleheader.

In the opener, the Argos posted back-to-back five-run innings to grab the win. Nicki Whitten had a two-run double for UNA and Shelby Goodman had two hits.

Summer Wilkerson was 2 for 4 while Mallory Patterson hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning for the Lions.
