FLORENCE — A construction worker was injured this morning at the University of North Alabama when he fell from a steel beam, authorities said.

The 44-year-old man, an employee of Dixie Steel, which is a subcontractor for Consolidated Construction of Alabama, was taken to Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital, officials said.

Officials at the scene would not release his name, pending treatment at the hospital.

A supervisor on the job site said he was expected to be OK.

The accident occurred at the construction site of the planned academic center and student commons building, behind Rogers Hall. Consolidated Construction of Alabama, Huntsville, received the $7.67 million contract to construct the three-story building.

Construction began at the end of August. Initially, the incident was reported as a 30-foot fall, but a worker at the scene said he doesn’t believe it was that high.
