Cougars rally past Wildcats

Waterloo hit some key 3-pointers and hit 10 consecutive free throws in the fourth period to come away with a 53-46 victory over Colbert Heights in boys basketball action Tuesday night.

Colbert Heights (1-2) led 26-18 at halftime and 36-29 after three periods. The Cougars then rallied in the final period behind Tyler Whipple and Taylor Hinton, who each knocked down a pair of 3-pointers. Bobby Fox hit two free throws with nine seconds remaining to give the Cougars (3-1) the lead for good.

Whipple led Waterloo with 17 points, followed by Hinton with 14 and Fox with 10. Kaleb Suggs scored 12 points and Dylan Marlar 10 for Colbert Heights.

n Bob Jones 71, Florence 65, 2OT: Bob Jones hit a 3-pointer with one second remaining in overtime to force a second overtime and the Patriots came away with a victory over Florence.

Florence (1-1) led 60-57 with six seconds remaining when the Patriots took the ball the length of the court and hit the game-tying shot.

Chaunce Watkins led Florence with 27 points. Isaac Dillard added 13 and Dee Smith 11 for the Falcons.

n Mars Hill 55, Wilson 52: Wilson missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer with five seconds left as Mars Hill held on to beat the Warriors.

The Panthers led 49-41 after Thomas Swinea hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to end the third period. Kenneth Henry hit a pair of treys in the fourth period to keep Wilson close, but the final shot would not fall for the Warriors.

Landon Willis was the leading scorer for Mars Hill (2-1) with 12 points, followed by Harrison Chastain with 11 and Joe Wilson with 10. Nick Boudoin led Wilson with 10 points.

n Belgreen 62, Red Bay 38: Belgreen held Red Bay to 10 points in the first half en route to an easy victory.

Chase Landers hit five 3-pointers and finished with 27 points for the Bulldogs (4-1). Dustin Smith scored 12 for Belgreen, while Josh DeVaney had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Barry Reach led Red Bay with 12 points.

n Loretto 52, Lexington 47: Nick Suratt scored 13 points and Mason Purser added 10 to lead Loretto past Lexington.

Wade McNutt scored 14 points and Zach Burnell had 10 for Lexington (1-2).

n Mount Pleasant 50, Collinwood 46: Hunter Andrews scored 14 points and Kelby Ray added 10 for Collinwood as the Trojans lost at home to Mount Pleasant.

n Adamsville 64, Wayne County 51; Sawyer Ray and Zack Risner scored 13 points each in a losing effort as Wayne County (2-3) fell to Adamsville.

n Athens Bible 55, Covenant Christian 37: Sam Griffin’s game-high 26 points wasn’t enough for Covenant Christian (1-6).

Tyler Hudson scored 15 for Athens Bible, which jumped out to a 24-6 first-quarter lead.

n James Clemens 59, Russellville 44: Russellville couldn’t overcome a slow start, managing 12 first-half points.

Jackson Smith finished with 12 points to lead the Golden Tigers (1-1).

n Phil Campbell 55, Cherokee 43: Colton Vickery poured in a game-high 29 points for Phil Campbell, while Skeeter Benford added 11.

Dylan Harris’ 11 points paced Cherokee (2-2), which led 21-17 at halftime, but was outscored 19-8 in the fourth quarter.

n Phillips 79, Vina 33: Tyler Crumpton sank six 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 26 points to lead Phillips.

Rodney Camp added 25 points for the Bears (3-0), who led 41-16 at halftime. Jake Bonner finished with 15.

n Shoals Christian 48, Central 45: Matthew Russ scored 17 points and Will Bishop added 16, as Shoals Christian outlasted Central.

Zach Williams led all scorers with 18 points for the Wildcats (1-1).

n Rogers 47, Lauderdale County 42: Rogers (1-0) got 15 points from Caleb Morrow and 13 from Reagan Curbow as it held on for a win.

Drew Newton scored a game-high 25 points for Lauderdale County (1-1), which went on an 8-0 run early in the second half to take a lead before being turned away.

n Lauderdale County 79, Rogers 43: Lauderdale County jumped out to a 22-9 lead after one period and never let up as the Tigers defeated Rogers.

Karlee Brown scored 15 points and Charata Cox scored 13 for the Tigers (2-0). Maggie Green paced Rogers (2-3) with 12 points.

n Adamsville 55, Wayne County 38: Taylor Hatcher led Wayne County (2-3) with 12 points as the Wildcats lost at Adamsville.

n Collinwood 59, Mount Pleasant 36: Collinwood had four players score in double figures in a victory over Mount Pleasant.

Laken Arnett led the Trojans (4-0) with 14 points. Alexis Haddock and Hannah Littrell scored 11 points each and Darby Hollis chipped in with 10 points.

n Lexington 50, Loretto 42: Haven Albright scored a game-high 19 points bringing her career total to 1,019 for Lexington.

Albright, who reached the century mark last week at the Danville Thanksgiving tournament, was presented a commemorative ball before the game.

Loretto led 22-17 at halftime and the game seesawed until Lexington pulled away in the final 2:45 while making 11 of 16 fourth-quarter free throws.

Savannah Stults added 14 points for Lexington (5-1). Rachel Burden (14) and Kayla Santiago (13) led Loretto.

n Colbert Heights 44, Waterloo 43: Colbert Heights made the front end of a 1-and-1 free-throw opportunity to take the lead with 7 seconds left and Waterloo couldn’t answer.

Destinee Pratt led all scorers with 16 points for Colbert Heights.

Baylee Atkinson’s 12 points led Waterloo (1-3).

n Central 44, Shoals Christian 30: Bailey Nelson led Central (2-0) with 13 points.

Lacey Lindley scored a game-high 17 for Shoals Christian, which trailed 27-10 at halftime and 38-18 through three quarters.

n Mars Hill 53, Wilson 43: Ann Marie Mitchell scored 8 of her game-high 16 points in the first quarter, as Mars Hill jumped out to a 14-5 lead.

Maddison Jacobs added 10 points for the Panthers (3-0). Ciarra Edwards’ 14 points paced Wilson (1-3).

n Red Bay 55, Hatton 28 (Monday): Lexy Lindsey finished with a game-high 17 points to lead Red Bay in a rout of its 2A rival.

Allie Kennedy added 10 points for the Tigers.

n Red Bay 49, Belgreen 9: Red Bay jumped out to a 15-4 lead, let Belgreen hold the ball for the entire second quarter, and outscored the Bulldogs 34-5 in the second half.

Lindsey (12) and Kennedy (11) scored in double digits for the Tigers (2-0).

n Covenant Christian 50, Athens Bible 37: Anna Claire Noblit made nine 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 36 points to lead Covenant (7-0).

The Eagles jumped out to a 21-5 first-quarter lead.

Ashley Riggins’ 13 points paced Athens Bible (0-2).

n Phil Campbell 55, Cherokee 19: Autumn Thomas led all scorers with 14 points for Phil Campbell, which jumped out to a 28-2 first-quarter lead.

Chloe Cosby’s 7 points led Cherokee (0-4).

n Vina 50, Phillips 37: Morgan Humphries scored a game-high 20 points for Vina, which led 27-22 at halftime.

Jessica Pickle added 13 points for the Red Devils. Raven Lolley scored 17 for Phillips (1-2).
