Lexington stifled Brooks defensively, and the Class 2A No. 4 Golden Bears overcame a cold-shooting first-half in a 43-32 win Tuesday in girls high school basketball.
Lexington (12-2) held Brooks to five first-half points, but managed 13 of its own. The Golden Bears found some offense from there, scoring 16 in the third quarter and led by at least nine the rest of the way.
Addie McGee scored a game-high 14 for Lexington, wihle Haven Albright added 11.
K’maya Roach and Kalee Beasley scored eight points each for Brooks.
n Covenant Christian 52, Athens Bible 25: Class 1A No. 3 Covenant (14-1) started on a 12-0 run and cruised to a 5-0 record in Area 16 play.
Anna Claire Noblit scored a game-high 18 points for the Eagles, who led 29-6 at halftime. Bailey Hill added 16.
n Lauderdale County 58, Clements 43: The Tigers bounced back from a loss to West Limestone to beat Class 3A, Area 16 rival Clements.
Chatara Cox scored 21 points and Karlee Brown added 14 for the Tigers (9-2, 2-1). Lauderdale County outscored Clements (8-4) 32-19 in the second half.
Daneshia Malone led Clements with 21 points.
n Phil Campbell 67, Cherokee 21: Phil Campbell broke out to a 26-3 lead in the win against Cherokee.
Autumn Thomas scored 17 for the Bobcats (8-5), while Madison Hardy scored 16 and Hope Cook 14.
n Hackleburg 53, Hubbertville 37: Katlyn Adams scored 18 points and Hackleburg broke a losing streak in the win against Hubbertville.
Abby Lolley added 16 points and Kristen Camp scored 10 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.
n Belgreen 57, Phillips 32: Lexi Bragwell scored 21 points and Lakin Bragwell added 20 as Belgreen beat Phillips.
Each of the Bragwells had nine points in a second quarter that saw Belgreen (5-6, 3-2) outscore the Bears 22-11.
Emily Bradbury’s nine points paced Phillips.
n Collinwood 54, Loretto 52: Alexis Haddock hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key at the buzzer as Collinwood beat Loretto.
Lexie Risner led Collinwood (8-1, 2-0) with 13 points and Laken Arnett scored 11. Haddock was one of three players with eight points.
Rachel Burden led Loretto with 25 points and Becca Brodie scored 12.
n Hatton 57, Sheffield 19: Three players scored in double figures as Hatton (6-7, 1-1) downed Sheffield in Class 2A, Area 15 play.
Hatton’s Boston Claborn led all scorers with 11 points and added 12 rebounds, while Sydney Terry and Mariah Cantrell each had 10 points.
Tyzia Pride scored 10 for Sheffield (0-7, 0-2).
n Tharptown 49, Waterloo 36: Kamri Sears scored a game-high 21 points and Danielle Creasy added 11 as Tharptown (8-2) knocked off Waterloo (2-9).
The Wildcats shut out the Cougars 18-0 in the third quarter to seal the home win.
Baylee Atkinson led Waterloo with 19 points.
n Deshler 48, Russellville 23: Deshler improved to 8-2 on the season scoring a home win over Russellville.
The Tigers jumped out to an 18-6 first-quarter lead.
Jothani Dixon paced the Tigers with 12 points, while Christian Darnell added 10.
Rachel Garrison led Russellville with 12.
n Mars Hill 47, Muscle Shoals 27: Mary Brooke Willis scored a game-high 13 points as Mars Hill (11-1) outpaced Muscle Shoals.
The Panthers broke it by outscoring the Trojans 29-4 in the second and third quarters.
Shana Sherrod led Muscle Shoals with 12.
n Rogers 62, Central 47: The Pirates outscored Central 36-24 in the second half to avenge an early-season loss and claim a 4A, Area 16 road win.
Morgan Killen tallied 15 to lead Rogers, while Maggie Green added 14, and Lindsay Hamner 12.
Sophomore Abby Keener scored a game-high 18 for Central (7-3, 2-1) and Brooke Poole had 10.
Boys
n Athens Bible 53, Covenant Christian 36: Sam Griffin poured in a game-high 22 points, but Covenant couldn’t hang on after leading at halftime.
The Eagles (2-11, 0-5 Area 16) led 22-20 after the first half.
Tyler Hudson and Will Hamilton had 12 points each for Athens Bible.
n Colbert County 62, Colbert Heights 57: Four Colbert County scorers reached double digits, as the Indians outlasted their county rival.
Kaleb Suggs led all scorers with 21 for Colbert Heights (5-5). Tynan Rea added 18 points and hit a 3 to make it a 3-point game in the final 3 minutes, but the Wildcats got no closer.
Tobias Qualls (16), Sam Howard (14), Malik Hamilton (11 and Jonah Casteel (12) scored in double figures for the Indians. Casteel sank 5 of 7 free throws in the fourth quarter.
n Brooks 70, Lexington 55: Jacob Richardson scored a season-high 18 points to lead the Lions (7-4) past Lexington.
Richardson and Canaan Sides each scored six points in the first quarter as Brooks took a 21-4 lead. Jack Singletary added 10 points for Brooks, while Sides had eight.
Jake Rogers topped Brooks with 14 points and Wade McNutt added 13.
n Collinwood 51, Loretto 42: Kelby Ray scored 10 points and Collinwood outscored Loretto 31-22 in the second half to collect a district win.
The Mustangs improved to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in district play. Andrew Shelton led Loretto with 11 points.
n Phillips 67, Belgreen 53: Rodney Camp scored a game-high 32 points and grabbed 20 rebounds as Phillips avenged an earlier loss to Belgreen.
Camp was 10 of 12 at the free-throw line to cap his night. Tyler Crumpton added 17 points for the Bears (9-2, 4-1).
Chase Landers had 27 points for Belgreen. Brock Hester scored 10.
n Sheffield 45, Hatton 44: Shaquille Carroll scored a game-high 19 points and converted a 3-point play with 10 seconds remaining as Sheffield (5-3, 1-1) clipped Hatton for the Class 2A, Area 15 win.
Ty Terry paced Hatton with 18 points and Laron Cooper had 12.
n Mars Hill 65, Muscle Shoals 63: Thomas Swinea scored with 8 seconds remaining to propel Mars Hill (10-2) to its third straight win.
The Panthers held an 18-17 lead after the first eight minutes and extended the margin to 35-32 at the half, in a game which never saw the lead beyond 5 points.
Landon Willis scored 17 points for Mars Hill. Harrison Chastain added 11 and Joe Wilson and sophomore Ethan Smith chipped in with 10 apiece.
Debo Reeder netted 15 for Muscle Shoals (0-5) and Damarius King had 12.
n Deshler 73, Russellville 67: B.J. Bailey scored 21 points and Thomas Gamble added 15 as Deshler (4-4) grabbed a commanding early lead and fought off Russellville late to earn the home win.
Deshler grabbed a 34-22 lead heading in to halftime and extended it to 55-38 after three quarters.
Caleb Robinson notched 21 to lead Russellville, while Jackson Smith had 19.
Chandler Brown added 12 points for Deshler.
n Tharptown 64, Waterloo 58: Three players scored in double figures for Tharptown (10-5), as the Wildcats outlasted Waterloo.
Tharptown claimed a 31-27 halftime advantage and fought off a late Waterloo rally to earn the win.
Riley Nolen led Tharptown with 19 points, while Max Nolen tallied 18, and Kelby Hallmark 16.
Wayne Darby poured in 32 for Waterloo and Evan McFall added 12.
n Phil Campbell 71, Cherokee 53: Colton Vickery led all scorers with 21 points, while Skeeter Benford added 15, as Phil Campbell improved to 9-4 overall and 4-0 in area play.
Dylan Harris posted 20 points for Cherokee, while Jeffrey Patrick had 13, and Austin Gooch 11.
