FLORENCE — Firefighters were met with heavy smoke when they arrived at Madison Square Townhouses on Bradshaw Drive on Tuesday morning.
"We didn't see any flames, but once we got inside, there was a pretty good fire in the living room area," Florence Fire Battalion Chief Ben Cochran said.
The fire was reported by a neighbor just after 11 a.m. The neighbor said he saw smoke coming from a rear window.
He said firefighters made an aggressive attack on the fire, which was inside Townhouse 8-E, and were able to get the fire out before it spread throughout the residence.
Cochran said the townhouse sustained fire, smoke and water damage.
"The apartments on both sides suffered some smoke damage," Cochran said. "But the guys did a really good job getting in and getting it out quickly."
He said no one was home at either of the apartments.
The origin of the fire is under investigation.
