FLORENCE — School board members approved today the voluntary transfer of Beth Weir from teaching mathematics at Florence Middle School to teaching social studies at Hibbett Middle School.
Weir was on paid leave since mid-May until Wednesday when the school board, at the end of a 10-hour hearing, voted to suspend her without pay until Jan, 2. That will be when classes resume after Christmas break.
Weir is not receiving benefits during the 75-day suspension period. She continued receiving a portion of her annual salary during the five months she was on leave.
“The transfer was agreeable to all parties involved,” said board President Bill Jordan. “It’s a new environment with a new school and a fresh start.”
Superintendent Janet Womack recommended Weir’s termination on basis of neglect of duty and insubordination, but the school board opted to suspend Weir until the beginning of the second semester. She was originally scheduled to go back to Florence Middle School.
Weir was unavailable for comment after Thursday’s board meeting.
The school board also approved Jessica Byrd, a special education teacher at Hibbett Middle School, as a temporary assistant principal at the school. Byrd, who is in her sixth year at Hibbett, will continue in the position through June 3.
