Florence closes riverside park, evacuates campers
By Robert Palmer
The TimesDaily

FLORENCE — City officials closed McFarland Park and its campground Tuesday, evacuating campers to higher ground.

City spokesman Phil Stevenson said the riverside park was inundated with water as rain continues to fall in a significant winter storm.

The National Weather Service is warning of flooding along creeks and rivers in the region. The Tennessee River has been rising for more than 24 hours, placing the low-lying McFarland in the path of flood waters.

Stevenson said the park is expected to remain closed for several days. After high waters recede, he said city workers will clean up debris and assess any damage in the park.

The public is advised to stay away from the park until further notice, he said.
