ATHENS — When the search for a new Clements High football coach began, school administrators hoped to recharge interest in the program with a proven new hire.

Now almost three months later, Clements assistant principal and athletics director Kevin Davis believes they have the right person for the job.

The Limestone County Board of Education unanimously approved the hiring of former Rogers High coach Dan Beavers on Thursday at its monthly meeting. He replaces Michael Brown, who resigned Nov. 17 after compiling a 3-27 record in three seasons.

“This is a big hire for Clements High School and our student athletes,” Davis said. “To get someone with the experience of Dan Beavers, someone who has been successful as a head coach, this is going to be a great fit for our program.”

With Beavers, Clements hired a football coach with a proven record of success at a school from a similar community.

Beavers previously spent 11 seasons at Rogers, where he compiled a 75-50 record while leading the Pirates to the playoffs seven times. His teams reached the Class 3A state quarterfinals in 2003 and 2004, and his 2011 team advanced to the semifinals in his last season.

“I can’t wait to get back into coaching,” Beavers said. “Last season was the first time in 30 years that I wasn’t coaching or playing football. I got to spend a lot of time with my kids, but I’m ready to get back to coaching football.”

At Clements, Beavers said he plans to use the same coaching philosophy that made Rogers successful.

“It’s the same system that I’ve always used,” he said. “Everything starts in the weight room. It’s all about developing toughness and learning how to compete. Clements has the same type of kids we had at Rogers, so I know we can be successful.”

Beavers, a 1988 Rogers graduate, played football at Troy from 1988-91. At Clements, he will teach physical education.

Davis worked five seasons for Beavers as an assistant coach.

“I know he’s super excited to get a chance to work at Clements, and we’re excited about having him come here,” Davis said. “I’m happy to work with him again because I know his method of coaching, and know he’s great at working with kids.

“There’s a lot of potential to build a good program out here, and I think Coach Beavers is the perfect person for the job.”
