It’s Annoy A Groundhog Day, repeat

When I think of Groundhog Day, I tend to think about that movie by the same title in which Bill Murray keeps living the same day over and over.

Could you imagine repeating the same thing over and over?

Since today is Groundhog Day, I thought I’d write something to meet that occasion.

When I think of Groundhog Day, I tend to think about that movie by the same title in which Bill Murray keeps living the same day over and over.

Could you imagine repeating the same thing over and over?

Instead of focusing on the repeating concept of this beloved holiday, I want to discuss those varmints that expect us to care about what happens when they crawl out of their holes. I am, of course, talking about Congress.

I know, I know, that makes no sense. But I’ve found throughout the years that any joke that ends in, “I am, of course, talking about Congress” gets an easy laugh.

However, the varmints I’m talking about today are groundhogs.

There is a belief that, if the groundhog sees its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. This is based on the scientific fact that, if it sees its shadow, that means it’s sunny outside. And, if it’s sunny outside, that has absolutely nothing to do with whether there will be six more weeks of winter.

I’ll bet it drives the groundhogs crazy every Feb. 2 when they start their day. I can just imagine a groundhog’s thought pattern:

“Well, it’s morning. Think I’ll shimmy on up this hole and see what’s — what are all these people doing here?”

The groundhog checks the calendar. “Oh, no, not Feb. 2 already? Hey you idiots, I have no idea what the next six weeks has in store! Ever hear of meteorology? I am a rodent. I don’t even know why I live in a hole. Leave me alone!”

Dozens of cameras click.

“Great — the paparazzi! They’re not even getting my good side. And now they’re murmuring because I can see my shadow. Here’s an idea: If you don’t want me to cast a shadow maybe you can turn off those bright camera lights!

“Honestly, you people need to worry about a different set of rodents who are impacting your lives.

I am, of course, talking about Congress.”
