FLORENCE - Lauderdale County jurors have returned a guilty verdict against Shawn Johnson who was charged with the death of Keith Barnett.

Barnett was found beaten and unconscious on Alabama 17 in Lauderdale County on July 29, 2000, and died Sept. 21 that same year. He was 22.

Shawn Johnson, 42, and his brother, Shannon Johnson, 43, were arrested in May 2011. Shannon Johnson pleaded to manslaughter last year for a 20-year sentence and agreed to testify against his brother. However, when he took the stand this week, he said he changed his mind. Prosecutors have not said how or if this change affects the plea agreement.

The verdict against Shawn Johnson concludes Johnson's week-long murder trial.

Included at the trial this week was testimony from a witness who said he saw the brothers beating Barnett with what looked like a bat outside Little Sands bar, which is just across the Alabama-Tennessee line.
