KILLEN — After 11 years as police chief, Mark Parker was not reappointed to his position Monday during the newly elected council's organizational meeting.

Killen Mayor Tim Tubbs said after the new council and mayor were sworn in that no one moved to reappoint Parker as police chief.

"Since there was no motion to reappoint him, he was not renewed as police chief," Tubbs said.

Tubbs said Killen police Lt. Bryan Hammond was appointed to the chief's position on an interim basis.

Parker, 53, has been with the Killen Police Department for almost 25 years. He worked for two years at the Madison Police Department before coming to Killen.

"That's the way it is in small towns when it comes to the police chief," Parker said. "Every four years 60 to 100 chiefs across the state are not reappointed."

Parker said the decision is difficult to accept because there was no reason given for why he wasn't reappointed.

Tubbs said the council will be discussing the position at a future meeting.
