Neighbors’ reaction leads to arrest

FLORENCE — Police said the quick reaction of Broadway Street neighbors led to the arrest of a man accused of breaking into a house Wednesday morning.

Terry Donnel Hankins, 45, 426 W. Mobile St., Florence, is charged with third-degree burglary and second-degree theft of property, police said.

Florence officer Kevin Garner, responding to a burglary call by the neighbors, caught a suspect inside the residence. Hankins’ former girlfriend lives at the house.

Investigators said the burglary took place about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday when no one was at home.

Police said Hankins is accused of trying to take food, purses, clothing and a number of household items. He is being held in the Lauderdale County Detention Center on bail of $2,500.
