Second man jailed in good Samaritan theft case

FLORENCE — Police said a man wanted in connection with stealing money from a good Samaritan is in the Jefferson County Jail.

Florence police said they were notified Wednesday that Christopher Ryan Marsh, 34, of Florence, is in custody in Jefferson County after he was arrested for driving a stolen vehicle.

Marsh had outstanding warrants for first-degree theft of property and 11 counts of fraudulent use of a credit card.

Police said Marsh and Michael Shane Canaday, 45, also of Florence, are accused of taking advantage of a local woman’s generosity when she gave them a place to stay. Canaday is in the Lauderdale County Detention Center.

The men are accused of transferring $10,000 from the woman’s bank account to an account they set up and then used a credit card to make purchases.

Marsh will be transferred to Lauderdale County.

Sex offender fails to register

MOULTON — A man convicted of rape in 1997 has been arrested for not registering as a sex offender.

David Edward Jones, 51, 2111 Lawrence 319, Moulton, is charged with failure to register as a sex offender, Lawrence County Sheriff Gene Mitchell said.

He said Jones failed to show up for his quarterly reporting appointment.

Jones was convicted in September 1997 of second-degree rape. The victim was a 13-year-old girl.

Mitchell said state law mandates sex offenders register every three months with law enforcement.

Authorities said failing to report to law enforcement is a Class C felony punishable by 1-10 years in prison.

Jones is being held in the Lawrence County Jail. No bond was set Wednesday afternoon.
