Lawrence school board vote heads for recount
By Jason Houston The Moulton Advertiser

MOULTON — Provisional ballots in Lawrence County changed the vote totals — and the apparent winner — in the District 2 Board of Education race.

A recount is next.

Incumbent Gary Bradford received all six provisional votes in the District 2 race, lifting him past challenger Norman Pool by four ballots — 1,394 to 1,390. Pool led by two votes after election night Nov. 6.

Bradford said he was pleased with the results but remains anxious to see official results after the recount.

“We’ll have to wait and see if this four-vote total stands up,” he said. “But we have several projects going on in District 2, and I’d like to see them completed.”

Probate Judge Mike Praytor and Sheriff Gene Mitchell, along with representatives from the local Republican and Democratic parties, opened and counted 30 provisional ballots Tuesday.

Praytor said the votes will be officially canvassed Friday, and an automatic recount triggered by state law because of the close margin would then ensue. Then either candidate can choose to contest the election if there is reason to believe results are wrong.
