Lexington defense stifles Tigers

Class 2A, No. 4 Lexington went on the road and held Class 3A, No. 1 Lauderdale County to its lowest offensive output of the season to claim its seventh win in a row, 51-36 on Friday night.

Lauderdale County owned a 27-22 advantage after a back-and-forth first half, but hot outside shooting and a switch by the Golden Bears to a zone defense in the third quarter swung the momentum.

Lexington (25-6) claimed a two-point lead with eight minutes remaining and outscored the Tigers 19-6 in the game’s final quarter.

Lexington’s Haven Albright scored a game-high 22 points, including five 3-pointers. Savannah Stults knocked down three 3-pointers and finished with 16 points. Sydney Corum added 10.

Chatara Cox and Karlee Brown each had 9 points for Lauderdale County (26-5).

It was the final regular-season game for both teams and gave the Golden Bears at least one win over every team in Lauderdale County.

West Limestone 45, Brooks 35: Three players scored in double figures as West Limestone stopped Brooks.

Sophomore Kayla Carter scored 12 points for the Wildcats (18-7), while Autumn Bates had 11, and Shelby Clay 10.

Erin Jewell led the way for Brooks (14-12) with 14 points and Deanna Thompson added 11.

Covenant Christian 47, Sheffield 18: Anna Claire Noblit poured in 24 points, including six 3-pointers, as Class 1A, No. 2 Covenant Christian (23-3) beat Sheffield.

Buckhorn 46, Muscle Shoals 32: Buckhorn improved to 18-7 on the season with a home win over Muscle Shoals.

Shana Sherrod had a game-high 12 points for Muscle Shoals (7-17).

Deshler 53, Central 50: Deshler built a big halftime lead and then held on at Central.

Lauren Cantrell scored 10 points to pace the Tigers (21-7) and Julia Burton added 9 points and 12 rebounds.

Abby Keener’s 20 points topped Central.

R.A. Hubbard 55, Colbert County 41: Oresha Sherrod scored 10 of her 14 points in the fourth quarter as R.A.Hubbard topped Colbert County.

The Class 1A, No. 3 Chiefs (16-4) took the lead in the first quarter and steadily pulled away. Ashlyn McCoy added 11 points in the win. Mija Newsome topped Colbert County (6-15) with 12 points.

Red Bay 55, Belgreen 25: Red Bay held Belgreen to five points in the first half on the way to an easy win.

Casey Sparks led Class 2A No. 5 Red Bay with 10 points as 12 players scored.

Allison Bragwell topped Belgreen with 13 points.

Marion County 41, Hackleburg 40: Hackleburg’s Kristen Camp scored 17 points and grabbed 16 rebounds but Marion County made a big early lead hold up to get the win.

Katlyn Adams added 10 points for the Panthers (12-8). Noel Smith topped Marion County with 13 points.

Shoals Christian 54, Phil Campbell 41: Four Shoals Christian players scored in double figures as the Flame used a big third quarter to top Phil Campbell.

Lacey Lindley scored 16 points, Grace Matthews added 14 points, Kyra Agnew added 12 and Kalyn Davis finished with 10 for the Flame (10-17).

Shoals Christian broke open a tight game by outscoring Phil Campbell 14-2 in the third quarter. Bethany Cook scored 12 poins and Autumn Davis added 10 for Phil Campbell.

Tharptown 62, Waterloo 30: Kamri Sears scored 17 points to lead Tharptown past Waterloo.

Bradi Morris led Waterloo (6-20) with 11 points.

Summertown 44, Collinwood 38: Summertown emerged with a win in a battle of Top-10 teams in Class A.

No. 2 Summertown held No. 10 Collinwood (17-5) to 13 points in the first half.

Alexis Haddock led the Trojans with 13 points while Hannah Littrell had 11. Megan Kilburn and Morgan Long led Summertown with 14 points each.

Loretto 40, Wayne County 25: Sabrie Sirmones scored 6 of her game-high 15 points in the first quarter, as Loretto opened with a 10-0 run.

Wayne County cut its deficit to within nine but got no closer.

Kayla Santiago added 12 points for the Mustangs (8-16), while Jessie Ray’s 10 paced Wayne County.

Boys

Phil Campbell 49, Shoals Christian 47: Two late free throws broke a tie and Phil Campbell deflected a last-second shot from the corner to beat Shoals Christian.

Skeeter Benford scored 13 points and Cameron Harris added 12 for Phil Campbell (13-13), which snapped a four-game losing streak. Daniel Wood led Shoals Christian (12-13) with 17 points. Matthew Russ added 12 and Will Bishop finished with 10.

Lexington 46, Lauderdale County 44: Jake Rogers hit three second-half 3-pointers and finished with 18 points as Lexington edged Lauderdale County to close the regular season.

The Golden Bears trailed 22-21 at the midway point. Lexington outscored the Tigers 16-9 over the final eight minutes and sealed the win when a Lauderdale County 3-pointer rimmed out at the buzzer.

Zach Bunnell had 10 points for Lexington (9-11).

Nathaniel McCafferty posted 12 points for Lauderdale County (8-18) and Daniel Tiede chipped-in with 10.

Tharptown 44, Waterloo 38: Kelby Hallmark scored 12 points, four of which came in the final minute, as Tharptown fought off a late Waterloo rally.

The Wildcats (15-10) held Waterloo to three points in the second quarter and managed a 21-9 halftime advantage. Waterloo got within three points with 50 seconds remaining, but could not complete the comeback.

Tyler Whipple led Waterloo (9-14) with 13 points.

Phillips 69, Cherokee 36: Phillips jumped out to a 24-8 lead in the first quarter and cruised to a victory over Cherokee.

Rodney Camp led Phillips (22-6) with 24 points while Jake Bonner scored 16 and Tyler Crumpton had 13. Ty Deaton led Cherokee with 14 points.

West Limestone 39, Brooks 34, OT: West Limestone held Brooks to just nine points in the second half and overtime and held on to upset the No. 7 Lions, which led 25-21 at halftime. Brooks hit a 3-pointer to open overtime but was scoreless the rest of the way as West Limestone scored the final eight points.

Aaron McWilliams led West Limestone (20-8) with 13 points while Skyler Beck led Brooks (22-7) with 11.

Buckhorn 61, Muscle Shoals 57: Muscle Shoals rallied in the fourth quarter against Buckhorn, but fell just short. The Trojans trailed by 11 points with five minutes and pulled within 60-57, but missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer with 8 seconds left.

LeDamian Stanford led Muscle Shoals (9-15) with 19 points while Debo Reeder scored 15 and Jake Wood had 10.

Collinwood 71, Summertown 56: Collinwood (17-5) scored 62 of its 71 points in the final three quarters to race past Summertown to finish the regular season 9-1 in area play.

Wesley Pigg and Logan Montgomery combined to score 42 points. Pigg scored 22 while Montgomery had 20. Hunter Andrews added 11 points for the Trojans while Kelby Ray tallied 10.

Deshler 60, Central 44: Deshler outscored Central 21-8 in the third quarter to turn a close game into a 16-point victory.

Thomas Gamble led Deshler (14-12) with 19 points while Zach Garner scored 15 and B.J. Bailey had 11. Desmond Koger scored 15 points to lead Central.

Sheffield 70, Covenant Christian 23: Shaq Carroll scored 10 of his game-high 19 points in the first quarter, as Sheffield built a 22-2 lead.

Hunter Danley added 15 points for the Bulldogs, while Michael Lossau’s 7 led Covenant (3-20).

R.A. Hubbard 52, Colbert County 49: Austin Beasley’s contested jumper banked in high off the glass with 3 seconds left, providing the winning margin for R.A. Hubbard.

Beasley finished with 15 points.

Jonah Casteel led all scorers with 17 for Colbert County (13-12).

Wayne County 49, Loretto 38: Sawyer Ray sank three 3-pointers, went 10-of-10 from the free-throw line and scored a game-high 25 points to lead Wayne County (10-12, 6-4 district).

Bailey Glass scored 19 points off the bench for Loretto.

Belgreen 67, Red Bay 57: Chase Landers had a double-double with a game-high 31 points and 11 rebounds to lead Belgreen.

Brock Hester added 12 points and 11 rebound for the Bulldogs (17-6).

Michael Ramirez (15), Austin Humphries (12) and Barry Reach (10) each scored in double figures for Red Bay.
