FLORENCE — Mallory Patterson was 6-for-7 with five RBIs to lead the University of North Alabama softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Gulf South Conference rival Christian Brothers on Wednesday.

With the 6-5, 4-3 sweep, No. 24 UNA (23-9, 8-6) moves into a tie for third place in the GSC standings.

Patterson, a freshman from Moulton, drove in four runs in the opener as UNA rallied for a 6-5 win. With the Lions trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth, she connected on a three-run home run to tie it.

The seventh inning ended with the same score, marking the fourth consecutive GSC series where UNA has played at least one extra-inning game. In the bottom of the eighth, Summer Wilkerson drew a bases-loaded walk for the win.

Patterson was 3-for-4 and added an RBI single in the third inning. Callie Steadman was 2-for-4 with an RBI while Ashley Bonner also added two hits.

Haley Barnette (9-6) got the win in relief. The junior allowed one hit in the final 32/3 innings.

UNA again used late-inning scoring to get a win in the second game. After Christian Brothers scored three runs in the top of the fifth to grab a 3-2 lead, the Lions responded in the bottom of the frame.

An RBI double by Steadman scored Wilkerson to tie the game at 3. Patterson then capped a 3-for-3 showing with her third single, driving home Steadman to give the Lions the lead.

Kayla Sneed (4-0) retired six of the next seven batters to get the win. She allowed four hits.

Steadman hit a solo home run in the fourth and finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

UNA hosts doubleheaders against UAH on Saturday and West Alabama on Sunday.

UNA baseball

UNA rallied from a 6-1 deficit to tie the game in the eighth but Montevallo got a run in the ninth to pull out a 7-6 win over the Lions at Mike Lane Field.

UNA (13-11) took a 1-0 lead in the fifth, only to have Montevallo go up 2-1 in

the top of the sixth. The Falcons then had a four-run seventh to push their advantage to 6-1. UNA got three in

the seventh and two in the eighth to tie the game, but Montevallo (20-9) scored the winning run on an errant throw in the ninth for the win.

North Alabama got its first run in the fifth inning when Matthew Tittle singled and scored on a Bradley Noland double. Montevallo went up 2-1 on a two-run homer by Jackson Slaid off UNA starter Brantley Claunch. Claunch allowed just two runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Trailing 6-1, UNA pulled within 6-4 in the seventh on Noland’s RBI double, and run-scoring singles by Thomas Lundborg and Josh Doyle.

Tittle singled home Dylan Boston and two errors allowed UNA to pull even at 6 in the eighth inning.

Montevallo reclaimed the lead on a double, a single and a throwing error.

Daymon Eriksen (1-2) took the loss. Alex Guillford (5-0) got the win.

Baseball

Central 9, Sheffield 4: Justin Pennington hit a two-run home run, Caleb McDonald had a two-run single and Murphy Harrison capped a six-run fifth inning rally with a two-run triple as Central (20-5) topped Sheffield.

Lane Dickerson got one out in relief for the win.

Pennington finished with three hits for the Wildcats.

Steven Roden just missed hitting for the cycle for Sheffield, hitting a double and a triple to go along with his home run.

Golf

Florence 148, Cherokee 203: Florence’s Bay Simpson, who shot a 41 to claim medalist honors in a 3-man match at Blackberry Trail.

Late softball

Covenant Christian 6, Shoals Christian 5: Olivia Lenz had three hits, including the game-winning single in the eighth inning as Covenant Christian beat Shoals Christian.

Robin Aldridge added three hits in the win, while Elizabeth Mitchell, Rachel Farris and Leah Hester had two hits each. Abby Lolley was the winning pitcher.

Cherokee 8, Red Bay 1: Morgan Sennett got the win and drove in two runs as Cherokee improved to 11-1.

Sarah Wilson and Tori Sockwell each had three hits and an RBI in the win. Audrey Goss led Red Bay with two hits.
