UNA baseball

UNA 21-15, Kentucky State 0-0: Chad Boughner became the winningest pitcher in the history of the North Alabama baseball program Saturday in helping lead the Lions to a doubleheader sweep of Kentucky State, 21-0 and 15-0.

Boughner, a senior from Florence, pitched eight shutout innings in the opener to improve his career record to 26-11, moving one victory ahead of Ken Head who won 25 games from 1989-92. Boughner also eclipsed Trey Mitchell’s UNA record of 2542/3 career innings pitched and his 14 strikeouts extended his school career mark to 244.

Game two starter Michael Watkins pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out 11. The sweep broke a four-game losing skid for the Lions (4-4).

In the opener Eric Wilson was 3 for 3 with a two-run triple and scored three times. Taylor Bonifacio and Josh Carpenter also had three hits each. Jake Ward and Josh Cyr drove in four runs each.

In the second game, UNA scored seven runs in the first inning. Cyr, Carpenter and Ward each had a run-scoring single and Wilson added a three-run double.

Dylan Boston and Bradley Noland each had three hits for the Lions.

The Lions and Thoroughbreds wrap up the series at 1 p.m. today.

Pool play is complete and the tournament now moves to eight-team bracket play starting Monday with quarterfinal games at Florence and Muscle Shoals. The championship is scheduled for Thursday at a site to be determined.

Deshler earned the top seed in Pool A, followed by Russellville, Florence and Rogers. In Pool B, Central was the No. 1 seed, followed by Mars Hill, Muscle Shoals and Sheffield.

Florence 7, Lexington 3: James Hillhouse had two hits and four RBIs to lead the Falcons past Lexington. Brandon Maxwell was the winning pitcher and Auty Wilson earned a three-inning save.

Seth Hill and Noah Richardson had two hits apiece for the Lexington.

Russellville 11, Florence 3: Hayden Evans had three hits and Luke Harris, Caleb Robinson and Jackson Smith had two each as Russellville (4-1) topped Florence (3-1).

Roland Adams and Tanner Crosslin each had two hits for Florence.

Sheffield 12, Priceville 2: Ryan Ruggles allowed two hits in four innings and Mitchell Lovell drove in four runs as the Bulldogs downed Priceville.

Simon Ridgeway, Steven Roden and Ruggles also had two hits each.

Muscle Shoals 6, Sheffield 3: Ryan Ware had three hits and drove in three runs to lead Muscle Shoals past Sheffield. Jason Weeks added two hits. Eric Yarbrough led Sheffield with three hits.

Deshler 6, Lauderdale County 0: Taylor Gross allowed one hit and struck out nine in five innings as Deshler blanked Lauderdale County.

Thomas Milstead led the Tigers with three hits, including a two-run double. J.T. Thompson and Will Davis had two hits each and Carson McGregory had a run-scoring double.

Deshler 12, Shoals Christian 2: Milstead had a bases-loaded double to drive in three runs in the first as Deshler beat Shoals Christian.

Thompson finished with two hits and three RBIs. Zach Skipworth and McGregory had two hits each for the Tigers (6-1). Joe McIlwain allowed three hits and struck out three in five innings to record the win.

Central 4, Mars Hill 3: Murphy Harrison’s walk-off two-run single in the bottom of the seventh gave Central a victory over Mars Hill.

The Wildcats trailed 3-0 after six innings. Parker Lovelady singled home two runs in the seventh and Murphy later had a bases-loaded single to bring home the tying and winning runs.

Caleb McDonald and Andrew Mace had two hits for Central, while Glenn Irby had three hits for Mars Hill. Lane Dickerson got the win in relief for Central.

Hatton 5, Central 3: Hatton scored two unearned runs in the sixth inning to beat Central.

Lovelady led Central (5-1) with three hits. McDonald and Zach Williams had two hits each for the Wildcats. Tyler Gooch had a run-scoring single for Hatton.

Shoals Christian 7, Lauderdale County 4: Shoals Christian scored three runs in the fifth inning to break open a tie game and defeat Lauderdale County.

Tanner Bozeman, Tanner Traglia and Dale Thomas each had two hits for the Flame (1-1). Traglia was also the winning pitcher in relief. Hunter Haney, Adam Berryhill and Caid Cornelius each had a double for LCHS.

Regular season

Colbert County 5, Colbert Heights 0: Tyler Craft allowed two hits and struck out 12 as Colbert County beat Colbert Heights.

Alex Vanderford led the Indians with two hits and Nick Isbell had a two-run single.

Colbert Heights 6, Cherokee 3: John David Isbell had two hits and two RBIs to help the Indians (5-0) remain unbeaten.

Jordan Bennett added a two-run single in support of winning pitcher Nick Isbell, who allowed one earned run with seven strikeouts. Jacob Fountain had two hits for Cherokee.

Softball

Colbert County 10, Muscle Shoals 0: Colbert County claimed the championship of the Sheffield Classic as the Indians defeated Muscle Shoals to go 4-0 in the tournament.

Bre Vandiver finished with three hits, including a home run and three RBIs for the Indians (4-0). Sydnie Brown and Taya Beth Sockwell chipped in with two hits each. Anna Grace Owens was the winning pitcher.

Colbert County 5, Ardmore 4: Owens scattered five hits and struck out six to lead Colbert County past Ardmore in four innings.

Sockwell and Sabrina Green had two hits each for the Indians.

Colbert County 9, Russellville 5: Brown, Vandiver and Makaila Aday each finished with two hits as Colbert County beat Russellville. Sierra Bond was the winning pitcher.

Colbert County 15, Covenant Christian 0: Vandiver had one hit and three RBIs to spark Colbert County past Russellville.

Owens added two hits and two RBIs in the win. Aday was the winning pitcher.

Sparkman 10, Central 0: Bailey Nelson had two hits Central as the Wildcats were shut out by Sparkman at the Hazel Green Classic.

Central 6, Bob Jones 5: Nelson singled home Emily Lovelace with the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh and Central held on to beat Bob Jones.

Kate Lambert had two hits for the Wildcats. Haley Liles earned the win and Laken Distefano recorded the save.

Hazel Green 7, Central 2: Central got a single and a double from Nelson as the Wildcats lost to Hazel Green. Andi Kimbrough also had two hits for Central (1-3-1).

Waterloo 3, West Limestone 0: Caragan Tribble double twice and Abby Austin pitched a shutout for the Cougars (3-1).

Madison Academy 4, Waterloo 0: Four Waterloo players had one hit in the loss.

Waterloo 6, Sheffield 2: Robin Russell led the Cougars with two hits and Austin earned her second win.

Waterloo 9, Decatur 2; Melea McFall and Rena Caddell each had three RBIs to lead Waterloo past Class 6A Decatur. Austin picked up her third win.

Muscle Shoals 5, Russellville 0: Rachel Brewer and Carley Malone had two hits each to back winning pitcher Krymson Lashley for the Trojans (3-1).

Muscle Shoals 10, Covenant Christian 0: Malone had three hits and scored twice as the Trojans won behind Sydnee Uhlman.

Boys Basketball

Collinwood 76, Santa Fe 62: Collinwood advanced to the semifinals of the Tennessee region 6-1A tournament with a victory over Santa Fe.

Kelby Ray hit four consecutive 3-pointers in the first quarter to spark the Wildcats to a 24-13 lead.

Tucker Robertson led the Trojans (20-8) with 19 points, followed by Logan Montgomery with 13, while Wesley Pigg and Ray added 12 points each.

Wayne County 67, Culleoka 42: Sawyer Ray scored 27 points, including 16 in the second half, to lead Wayne County past Culleoka in the region 6-1A tournament quarterfinals. Ray hit 10 of 11 free throws in the second half.

Zack Risner added 15 points for the Wildcats (13-14).
