Local roundup: Deshler boys rally past Lauderdale County

B.J. Bailey scored a game-high 16 points as Deshler (3-3) came from behind to claim a 53-52 Area 16 win over Lauderdale County in boys basketball action Friday night

Deshler trailed 26-18 at the half, before claiming a 40-39 edge after three quarters. Terrance Byrd sank a pair of key free throws late to secure the win.

Thomas Gamble chipped in with 12 points for Deshler.

Dustin Barksdale and Drew Newton each had 13 for Lauderdale County.

Deshler will play host to Colbert County tonight.

n James Clemens 65, Florence 57, OT: Florence fell to 0-2 in Area 16 play with 65-57 overtime road loss to James Clemens (5-3).

The Falcons trailed 30-21 at the half, before rallying to tie it at 41 in the third. The two teams traded baskets in the fourth quarter to send it to overtime 54-54. James Clemens outpaced Florence 11-3 in overtime to seal the win.

Chaunce Watkins scored 18 points to lead Florence (5-2) and Dee Smith had 15.

n Phillips 62, Berry 46: Phillips improved to 7-1 on the season and advanced to the finals of the North Alabama Conference Tournament with a victory over Berry.

Jacob Feltman and Rodney Camp each tallied 14 points for Phillips, while Jake Bonner added 12.

n Belgreen 65, Phil Campbell 39: Chase Landers scored 27 points, including three 3-pointers, as Belgreen (9-1) downed Phil Campbell.

Josh DeVaney pulled down 14 rebounds and tallied 10 assists to go along with his seven points for Belgreen, while Dustin Smith had 11.

Cameron Harris led Phil Campbell (8-4) with 15.

n Rogers 41, Elkmont 40: Caleb Morrow made a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left and Latham Thompson scored on a putback as time expired to give Rogers a thrilling win over Elkmont.

Rogers trailed by 3 in the final moments when Morrow was fouled shooting a 3-pointer. He knocked down two of his three attempts to draw the Pirates within one. On his missed third attempt, Morrow snared his own rebound to set up Thompson’s game winner.

Austin Kerr scored 10 points for Rogers (4-3).

n Russellville 62, Muscle Shoals 51: Three players scored in double figures as Russellville went on the road and downed Muscle Shoals.

Kaelan Bonds led Russellville with 14 points, while Caleb Robinson tallied 13 and Jackson Smith added 12.

Debo Reeder scored 14 for Muscle Shoals and Carson Cooper had 10.

n Lawrence County (Tenn.) 54, Loretto 46: Lawrence County opened with a 16-5 run and led throughout en route to 54-46 win over Loretto.

Heath Mansfield led the Wildcats with 17 points. Ethan Fowler led the Mustangs with 15 and Myles Burks 12,

n Wilson 47, Central 39: Kenneth Henry scored 18 points to lead Wilson to a victory over Central. Pate Wear added 12 points for the Warriors while Brennan Parrish scored 11 in the victory.

Austin Gean led Central with 13 points.

n Mars Hill 84, Clements 47: Mars Hill put on an offensive show against Clements on Friday, scoring 50 points in the first half en route to a victory over the Colts.

Ethan Smith led Mars Hill (8-2) with 16 points. Harrison Chastain scored 14 points while Landon Willis and Thomas Swinea each had 13.

n Brooks 66, East Lawrence 48: Brooks took a big first-half lead and cruised to victory over the Eagles.

The Lions led 39-26 at halftime and extended the lead to 53-36 after the third quarter.

Skyler Beck led Brooks (6-2) with 11 points.

n Waterloo 47, Athens Bible 43: Wayne Darby scored 23 points to lead Waterloo (5-5) to a close victory over Athens Bible.

Athens Bible was led by Sam Bobo and Tyler Hudson, who each scored 10 points.

n Cherokee 67, Vina 30: Cherokee led 23-0 after one quarter and never looked back in a 37-point victory.

The Indians had three players score in double figures, led by Austin Gooch with 17. Dylan Harris added 14 points for Cherokee (4-5) while Jolly Benjamin scored 13. Vina was led by Tyler Hammock with eight points.

n Whitesburg Christian 56, Covenant Christian 49: Covenant Christian entered the fourth quarter trailing by only two, was outscored 10-5 in the final period.

Covenant (2-10) was led by Sam Griffin with 16 points, Michael Lossau with 13 and John Lawler with 10.

n Tharptown 62, Winston County 46: Riley Nolen scored 24 points and Max Nolen had 12 as the Wildcats (7-5) beat Marion County.

Varsity Girls

n Mars Hill 49, Clements 38: Mars Hill jumped out to a first-quarter lead and rode it to a 49-38 victory against Clements. The Panthers led 15-8 after the first quarter, but were never able to completely put the Colts away.

Mary Willis led Mars Hill (9-1) with 13 points while Anna Katherine Green scored 12.

n Lauderdale County 67, Deshler 54: Lauderdale County got off to a slow start but woke up in the second quarter and cruised to a 13-point victory over Deshler.

Chatara Cox led LCHS (7-1) with 16 points while Makayla Liles scored 14, Karlee Brown 11 and Ivy Wallen 10. Layken Coman led Deshler with 13 and Lauren Cantrell had 12.

n Covenant Christian 49, Whitesburg Christian 18: Bailey Hill and Anna Claire Noblit combined to score 33 points to lead Covenant Christian to an easy win over Whitesburg Christian.

Hill scored 18 points to lead the Eagles (13-1) while Noblit chipped in with 15.

n Waterloo 41, Athens Bible 23: Waterloo’s defense clamped down on Athens Bible and led the Cougars to a victory. Baylee Atkinson led Waterloo with 15 points.

n Vina 48, Cherokee 19: Vina jumped out to an 18-3 lead after the first quarter and cruised past Cherokee.

Jessica Pickle led Vina with 12 points while Miranda Howard scored 11.

n Muscle Shoals 47, Russellville 13: Ardayzha Reeder and Lakken Long combined for 16 points as Muscles Shoals (2-5, 1-0) opened area play with a win over visiting Russellville (1-7, 0-1).

Ashley Dunstan led Russellville with six points.

n Brooks 68, East Lawrence 53: K’Maya Roach scored a game-high 20 points as Brooks (2-5) claimed a win over East Lawrence in Class 4A, Area 15 play.

Erin Jewell added 13 points for the Lions, while Britt McCormick added 11.

n Lexington 51, Hatton 40: Class 2A, No. 4 Lexington went on the road and scored a victory to open area play.

The Golden Bears (10-2) opened on a 14-6 run.

Haven Albright led Lexington with 16 points. Boston Claborn had 13 points and Sydney Terry 12 for Hatton (5-7).

n Rogers 71, Elkmont 40: Maggie Green and Ashley Robertson each scored 14 points as Rogers (6-5) upended Elkmont.

Morgan Killen added 13 for Rogers, while Cally Glass led Elkmont with 10.

n Central 48, Wilson 33: Bailey Nelson scored a game-high 24 points as Central outpaced Wilson.

Ciarra Edwards scored 19 to lead Wilson.

n Lawrence County, Tenn. 57, Loretto 41: Blake Ulewicz led all scorers with 15 points as Lawrence County defeated Loretto.

Ashley Johns had 11 points for Loretto.
