Madison hunter found in Bankhead
By Ronnie Thomas
The TimesDaily

Lawrence County Sheriff Gene Mitchell said members of the U.S. Forest Service have located a hunter who had been in the Bankhead National Forest since Saturday.

Mitchell said John Lapietra, 46, of Madison got separated from friends. “We’ve had people in the woods since Saturday looking for him,” Mitchell said. “They brought him out this morning after 8 o’clock near Gum Pond Cemetery.”

Mitchell said Lapietra texted rescuers periodically during the ordeal.

“He seems to be doing fine,” said Mitchell, who was at the scene. “He still had food.”
