MUSCLE SHOALS — Police are searching for a man they say took aluminum steps from a recreational area in Muscle Shoals and tried to steal soccer goals.
Police detective Lt. Seig Mueller said first-degree theft of property warrants have been issued for Laury King Weaver IV.
Mueller said the last residence for Weaver, 38, was on Annapolis Avenue in Sheffield.
“But he has several addresses where he has been living,” Mueller said. “We’ve been trying to find him, but he moves around a lot.”
Mueller said Weaver is accused of taking the steps and trying to take the metal soccer goals from the Muscle Shoals Sportsplex, which are near the North Alabama State Fairgrounds, on Monday morning.
“As employees were pulling up to the Sportsplex, they saw a man in a truck with the steps and goals in the back,” Mueller said. “The employees got out and started toward the man, and he drove off in a hurry.” Mueller said the soccer goals slid off the truck, but the man managed to get away with the steps.
Mueller said the employees got the truck’s license number and provided the man’s description to police.
“Then they identified him, and we worked with the district attorney’s office to get warrants,” Mueller said.
Police said the aluminum steps were recovered at a local scrap metal business.
“I’m sure that’s where he was heading with the goals had he not lost them while trying to get away,” Mueller said.
Anyone knowing anything about Weaver’s whereabouts is asked to call police at 256-383-6746 or Shoals Crime Stoppers at 256-286-8685.
