SHEFFIELD — A Florence man remained in jail this morning after police said he stole a truck Sunday morning and then ran from police.
William Hodges, 23, 809 E. Mobile St., Florence, is charged with first-degree theft of property, driving while under the influence, reckless endangerment, attempting to elude and various traffic violations, authorities said.
Police said Hodges is accused of taking a truck from outside a business on North Raleigh Avenue in downtown Sheffield.
Sheffield police detective Chad Carruth said the truck was parked outside a club on North Raleigh Avenue early Sunday morning.
“The owner went out to start his car about 2:15,” Carruth said. “He came out five minutes later to leave and the truck was gone.”
Carruth said the man called police and the dispatcher issued an alert. The truck, a 2002 F-150 Ford, was spotted going south on Nathan Boulevard.
“Officers tried to stop the truck, but the driver took off going down Jackson Highway and then onto Birmingham Street,” Carruth said. “A short time later, just behind the troopers post, the driver jumped out with it still going and it rolled to a stop.”
He said the man ran and after a short foot chase was caught.
Carruth said at the time of his arrest, Hodges was intoxicated and charged with DUI.
He said the truck was not damaged and was returned to the owner.
Hodges is in the city jail without bail at this time.
