John Woodrum, an investigator with the Lauderdale County District Attorney’s Domestic Violence Unit, said Woods was arrested Wednesday. He is in the Lauderdale County Detention Center on bail totaling $53,000.
Woods is accused of raping and sodomizing a 35-year-old Lauderdale County woman, who is an acquaintance of his. According to reports, the woman said the harassment occurred in January, while the rape, sodomy and attempted strangulation occurred earlier this week.
Authorities said the woman reported the incidents to the district attorney’s office, and the case was turned over to the domestic violence unit to investigate.
Woodrum would not elaborate on any details of the case since the investigation is ongoing.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice’s National Crime Victimization Survey, there are more than 207,000 victims (12 and older) of rape and sexual assault each year. That survey indicated there is some type of sexual assault every two minutes in the U.S.
Officials with the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network stated that 73 percent of sexual assault victims know their attacker.
First-degree rape and first-degree sodomy are both Class A felonies punishable by 10 years to life in prison if convicted.
