TUSCUMBIA — A Colbert County man has been charged with assault after he got mad when asked to repay a $20 debt, authorities said.
Herbert Bud Powell 30, 1530 Cane Creek Road, Cherokee, is charged with second-degree assault, Colbert County Sheriff Ronnie May said Wednesday.
The sheriff said Powell is accused of stabbing a 32-year-old Florence man in the stomach Dec. 26.
Reports indicate the victim told deputies he was at Powell’s residence with others when the incident happened.
Authorities said Powell hit the victim in the face when he was asked for $20 that he owed the victim.
May said the man ran outside and Powell followed, where they argued and fought. During the fight, deputies said Powell stabbed the victim in the stomach.
The Florence man was taken to Helen Keller Hospital where he had surgery and later was released.
Powell is being held in the Colbert County Jail on bail totaling $15,000.
Second-degree assault is a Class C felony, which is punishable by 1-10 years in prison if convicted.
