Shannon Paul Brewer told sheriff's investigators he killed a Lauderdale County man Monday night at a residence near Zip City, authorities said.
They said Brewer made the statement Wednesday as investigators interviewed him at the Leon County Sheriff's Office in Tallahassee, Fla.
Brewer, 24, 7876 Lauderdale 200, Florence, and his brother, Jerry Lee Brewer, 25, reportedly fled to Florida shortly after Mark Allen Dishon was stabbed to death Monday night, authorities said.
"They both gave us statements admitting their roles," said Lauderdale County sheriff's investigator Richard Richey, who is heading the investigation. "Shannon told us he killed (Dishon) and about the events that led up to it."
Shannon Brewer has been charged with murder and Jerry Brewer, 1402 S.W. Eighth St., Sheffield, is charged with first-degree theft of property for reportedly stealing a 2001 Toyota Sequoia they used on the trip to Florida.
U.S. Marshal agents apprehended them in Tallahassee about 14 hours after the attack.
Dishon, 49, was stabbed numerous times, and his body was found in a small room at his residence at 64 Lauderdale 638, which is on a dead end road near White's Lake.
Sandra Sikes, 66, who is Dishon's former wife and was living with him at the time, also was stabbed but was treated at the hospital and released.
Richey said it could be Monday before investigators receive a preliminary autopsy report, which should reveal how many times Dishon was stabbed.
The brothers signed waivers during a court appearance Wednesday that will lead to them being transported back to Lauderdale County, likely early next week, according to Richey.
He said he's still not sure why Dishon was killed.
"He told us he did it, but never really told us why," Richey said. "He said they got into an argument, and he ended up killing (Dishon). He just told us what happened and never said he feared for his life."
Richey said U.S. Marshal agents recovered a knife believed to be used in the stabbing and placed it in an evidence bag. He added he has not seen the knife.
Also confiscated was a handgun that Shannon Brewer had at the time of his capture.
Shannon Brewer visited Dishon's residence several times and had grilled out at times, investigators said. He arrived at the residence shortly after 7 p.m. Monday and they "drank a couple of beers together," according to Richey.
Sikes called 911 operators at 9:25 to report her ex-husband had been stabbed.
Richey said Shannon Brewer met his brother at a house on Lauderdale 24 and told him he needed help getting out of town. He added the SUV was stolen from an employee at a convenience store on U.S. 43 between Killen and Greenhill.
Jerry Brewer told investigators he was involved in stealing the car, according to Richey, who added the vehicle was brought back to Lauderdale County and will be released to the owner.
Richey said Shannon Brewer said he took a heater from Dishon's house and pawned it at a business in Georgia.
Authorities said evidence in the case will be turned over to the district attorney's office and more charges could be filed.
