RUSSELLVILLE — Authorities said an indictment has been issued against a local man who police said attacked and then choked his girlfriend until she passed out.

Courthouse officials said Ray Edward Nelson, 52, Holiday Plaza 106A, Russellville, is charged with domestic violence strangulation.

Franklin County District Attorney Joey Rushing said this is the first case of this kind in the county that has been presented to the grand jury for an indictment.

Reports indicate Nelson was arrested Jan. 4, after he was accused of beating and choking his 26-year-old girlfriend.

Police said Nelson and his girlfriend got into an argument at a residence on Waterloo Road.

Nelson is out of jail on bail of $20,000.
