UNDERWOOD — The man who was shot Saturday night by a Lauderdale County sheriff’s deputy has died from the injury.
Officials said Richard Fontenot, 35, died at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital late Saturday night.
Fontenot was shot at his 930 Lauderdale 57 residence when deputies responded to a call, officials said.
Fontenot met them at the door carrying a gun. Authorities said deputies were called to the scene because the man reportedly was threatening to do himself harm.
The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is investigating the case, which is usual procedure when a deputy is involved in a shooting, Sheriff Ronnie Willis said.
ABI agents arrived at the scene just after 11 p.m. Saturday. The deputy has been placed on leave with pay while the investigation continues, which is standard procedure, authorities said.
