FLORENCE — There will be a free concert Sunday benefitting Northwest Alabama Reading Aides.
The fourth annual Heart and Voice Church Choir festival will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Woodmont Baptist Church.
The concert includes a selection by each participating choir as well as a mass choir finale. Admission is free but a love offering will be collected to benefit Northwest Alabama Reading Aides.
Participating choirs include those from Cliff Haven Church, First Baptist Church, Sheffield, First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Florence, Trinity Episcopal Church, Underwood Baptist Church and Woodmont Baptist Church.
FLORENCE — The performance date for the Alabama Symphony’s concert in Florence has changed again.
The show, which is part of the Shoals on Stage series of events, is now scheduled for 7:30 p.m. March 4 at Norton Auditorium on the UNA campus.
The original concert was scheduled for Jan. 17 but was canceled because of winter weather concerns. All tickets for the originally scheduled performance will be honored.
SPEAKE — Fire broke out about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the old Speake High School.
A witness said members of the Speake Volunteer Fire Department contained the blaze to one end of the building near the library and extinguished the fire shortly after 11 a.m.
A dispatcher for the Lawrence County Emergency Management Agency said firefighters were dispatched at 10:24 a.m.
The building had been locked. There were no students in the area at the time of the fire and no one was injured.
Speake School, which goes from kindergarten through eighth grade, is nearby.
