No ‘Three-Peat’

I would like to address a mistake in the Nov. 14, 2012, article, “Three-Peat,” about Russellville High School football.

In this article, it is stated that the Russellville Golden Tiger football team won three consecutive Class 3A championships from 1966 through 1968.

The 1967 and 1968 championships are accurate.

The error lies in the 1966 season. This year included a game with Bradshaw, a then unclassified school, that led to the tiebreaker between Russellville and Walter Welborn (Anniston). Walter Welborn was ultimately awarded the state championship.

The Tigers are actually three time (non-consecutive) champions: 1961, 1967 and 1968. Russellville has always had a tradition of athletic excellence, and I take pride in being a part of it. The 1966 team had a great season, but fell just short of the championship.

I have obtained all the necessary documentation that verifies this error and would be happy to share it. I can be reached at the Franklin County Archives on Mondays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
