FLORENCE — A preliminary hearing will be held today for a Lauderdale County man charged on November slaying, authorities said.

Courthouse officials said Shannon Paul Brewer, 24, 7876 Lauderdale 200, Florence, will appear in District Judge Carole Medley’s courtroom at 1:30 p.m. to determine if there is enough evidence to send the case to the grand jury.

Brewer is charged murder and second-degree assault in connection with the Nov. 19 death of 49-year-old Mark Dishon and an attack on Dishon’s ex-wife, Sandra Sikes.

Dishon was stabbed multiple times, authorities said.

Brewer’s younger brother, Jerry Lee Brewer III, 23, 1402 S.W. Eighth St., Sheffield, is charged with first-degree theft in connection with the incident. Lauderdale County District Attorney Chris Connolly said he plans to ask an upcoming grand jury to upgrade Jerry Brewer’s charges to murder.
