Prep roundup: Central girls trip Wilson in 3OT thriller

Abby Keener hit two free throws in the closing seconds to send the game to overtime, and then scored nine of her game-high 29 points in the three overtimes to help Central down Wilson 57-53 in girls basketball Friday night.

Keener finished with seven 3-pointers in the win for the Wildcats, outdueling Wilson’s Brianna Terrell, who scored a season-high 20 points on the strength of five 3-pointers.

Keener’s free throws tied the game at 38 at the end of regulation.

Ciarra Edwards scored 16 points for Wilson and Harlee Murphy chipped in with 10 points.

n Waterloo 50, Athens Bible 48: Meagan Wilkerson scored 20 points to lead Waterloo to an overtime victory at Athens Bible.

The Cougars trailed 24-15 at halftime before rallying in the second half. Wilkerson finished with six 3-pointers, including three in the fourth period that helped the Cougars force the overtime. Bradi Morris hit a key 3-pointer in the overtime to spark Waterloo to the victory.

n Austin 52, Florence 44: Takisha Jordan poured in 24 points to lead Austin to a Class 6A, Area 16 win.

Austin (13-5, 5-0 in Area 16) built a 33-18 lead by halftime.

Alexis Sherrod paced Florence with 10 points and Missy Hooks tossed in nine.

n West Limestone 52, Rogers 32: West Limestone broke open a tight game in the third period, outscoring Rogers 22-8 en route to a victory over the Pirates.

Maggie Green scored 12 points to lead Rogers (11-9). Laura Easter led West Limestone with 12 points.

n Brooks 56, Priceville 44: A defensive change led to more offense for Brooks, and allowed the Lions to defeat Priceville and clinch the regular season area championship.

Brooks trailed 14-5 after one quarter, but switched from a man-to-man to a zone press defense, which forced turnovers that the Lions were able to turn into easy baskets. Brooks outscored Priceville 51-30 the remainder of the game.

Erin Jewell led Brooks (9-9) with 14 points while K’maya Roach and Deanna Thompson both had 10. McKenzie Parker led Priceville with 11 points.

n Tharptown 56, Phillips 16: Tharptown wrapped up a perfect Class 1A, Area 15 regular season with the 40-point victory over Phillips.

The Wildcats (12-4, 9-0) led 18-4 after the first quarter. Kassy Baker led the way with 13 points. Emily Bradbury had five points for Phillips.

n Hackleburg 53, Vina 41: Kristen Camp and Kaitlyn Adams combined for 36 points as Hackleburg beat Vina.

Camp scored a game-high 22 points and Adams added 14 to spark the win. Shelby Boyd scored 14 for Vina.

n R.A. Hubbard 47, Shoals Christian 40: R.A. Hubbard overcame a nine-point third quarter deficit to come back and defeat Shoals Christian.

Shoals Christian led 25-19 at halftime and expanded that lead to nine points, but R.A. Hubbard’s defense led the comeback, as the Chiefs forced several turnovers and held the Flame to just 15 points in the second half.

Alex Gholston scored 13 for Hubbard while Ashlen McCoy had 12 and Oresha Sherrod scored 10. Lacey Lindley led Shoals Christian with 15 points and Grace Matthews had 12.

n Collinwood 46, Frank Hughes 22: Collinwood improved to 4-0 in district play with an easy victory over Frank Hughes.

Alexis Haddock scored 18 points to lead the Trojans (13-1).

n Wayne County 55, Perry County 46: Morgan Ann Mathis hit a layup with 50 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime and Wayne County pulled away in the extra period to beat Perry County.

Stacey Creecy converted a three-point play in the overtime that helped Wayne County take control. The Wildcats hit 11 of 19 free throws in overtime.

Mathis finished with 13 points, followed by Jessie Ray with 12 and Creecy with 10. Reagan Floyd paced Perry County with 13 points.

Boys

n Austin 73, Florence 66: Malique Elliott scored 35 points to spark Austin to an area win at Florence, giving the Black Bears a sweep of the regular season series.

The Black Bears got off to a quick start and took a 19-13 lead after one period. Austin extended the margin to 35-23 at halftime.

Florence made a run at the Black Bears in the third period. Jacob Simpson scored nine points in the period as the Falcons trimmed the margin to 51-47. But Austin was able to maintain the lead behind Elliott, who finished 11-of-13 at the free-throw line.

Simpson led Florence (14-6, 2-3 area) with 19 points, followed by Rashawn Smith and Isaac Dillard with 12 each, Chaunce Watkins with 11 and Dee Smith with 10.

Tory Horace added 12 points for Austin.

n Mars Hill 74, Clements 51: Mars Hill wrapped up the Class 3A, Area 16 title with an easy win at Clements.

Landon Wilson scored eight points and Harrison Chastain had seven in the first period as the Panthers opened a 21-11 lead.

Mars Hill was able to maintain the double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Thomas Swinea led the Panthers (17-3) with 20 points, followed by Chastain with 19 and Willis with 16.

n Phillips 66, Tharptown 32: Phillips concluded Class 1A, Area 15 play with a victory at Tharptown.

The victory puts Phillips (15-5, 7-1) in a tie with Belgreen for the area championship.

Tyler Crumpton scored 20 points to lead the Bears, followed by Austin Campbell with 19 and Jake Bonner with 15. Kelby Hallmark led Tharptown with 12 points.

n Phil Campbell 56, Red Bay 55: Skeeter Benford hit a free throw with 6 seconds remaining to provide the winning margin for Phil Campbell against Red Bay.

The Bobcats led by four points in the fourth quarter before the Tigers rallied to tie the score. But Benford’s clutch free throw allowed the Bobcats to hang on for the win.

Benford led Phil Campbell (12-9, 5-0) with 16 points while Colton Vickery had 12 and Cameron Harris tallied 10. Red Bay’s Levi Humphres led all scorers with 22 points while Michael Ramirez chipped in with 14 for the Tigers.

n Lexington 54, Lauderdale County 46: Jay Rogers scored 8 of his team-high 20 points in the fourth quarter to help Lexington pull away.

Wade McNutt added 17 for the Golden Bears.

Drew Newton led all scorers with 23 points for Lauderdale County.

n Athens Bible 54, Waterloo 52: Wayne Darby led a fourth-quarter comeback bid that finished short for Waterloo.

Darby scored a game-high 23 points and sank two 3s that cut a one-time 9-point deficit to 3. He was fouled on another 3-point attempt with 27 seconds left, sank 2 of 3 free throws to make it a 1-point game and Waterloo rebounded the third.

But the Cougars turned it over and couldn’t get off a final shot.

Bradley Darby added 11 for Waterloo.

n R.A. Hubbard 55, Shoals Christian 51: The Chiefs held off a Shoals Christian rally in the second half to remain unbeaten in Class 1A, Area 16 play.

Austin Beasley scored 20 points to pace R.A. Hubbard (7-2, 4-0) and John Owens chipped in with 10 points.

Shoals Christian rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit but missed a 3-pointer to tie with 11 seconds to play.

Daniel Wood led Shoals Christian (9-10, 3-3) with 17 points. Will Bishop added 16 points and Mitchell Boyd had 10.

n West Limestone 53, Rogers 36: West Limestone got off to a fast start and never looked back in a 17-point win over Rogers. The Wildcats led 14-6 after one quarter and 34-14 at halftime before cruising in the second half.

Nathaniel Adams led West Limestone with 19 points while Aaron McWilliams had 11.

Brady Murks was the only scorer in double figures for Rogers (10-5) with 13 points.

n Collinwood 76, Frank Hughes 49: Kelby Ray hit five 3-pointers to spark Collinwood to a 33-point third quarter in a win against Frank Hughes.

Ray led the Trojans (10-4, 4-0 district) with 19 points. Logan Montgomery and Wesley Pigg added 10 points each.

Matt Lineberry scored 24 points to pace Frank Hughes.

n Perry County 47, Wayne County 38: Justin Edney scored 21 points, including hitting 8 of 10 free throws in the fourth period to lead Perry County to a win at Wayne County. Sawyer Ray scored 15 points and Keeton Kelly added 10 for Wayne County (6-10).
