BIRMINGHAM — A U.S. District Attorney’s spokeswoman said a third executive of a bankrupt Birmingham produce distributor has agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy for his role in using fake invoices and purchase orders to defraud the federal government.
In a release, spokeswoman Peggy Sanford said David Andrew Kirkland, 44, who now lives in Texas, was director of purchasing for the Adams Produce Co. and conspired with the company’s purchasing program specialist, Christopher Alan Pfahl, and CEO Scott David Grinstead.
Officials said the federal government contracted with the company to provide produce to military bases, public school systems, junior colleges and universities and the company’s executives drafted fraudulent invoices and purchase orders to mask its deteriorating financial condition.
