Muscle Shoals football player Dee Liner is considered one of the state's top prospects.

MUSCLE SHOALS — Dee Liner’s on-again, off-again flirtation with Auburn University is apparently off again.

Published reports Monday evening indicate Liner, a 4- or 5-star defensive line recruit depending on which of the numerous services are rating him, is now back on the recruiting market, telling Rivals.com, “I decommited from Auburn today.”

Liner, a 6-foot-2, 275-pound prospect, said he would make his decision on signing day and did not indicate with whom he will sign.

Liner was unavailable for comment Monday night and a message left for him went unreturned. Muscle Shoals coach Scott Basden was unavailable. “I’m going to make my decision on signing day,” Liner told Rivals. “I had to do what is best for me and I appreciate what Auburn has done for me. I appreciate them, I just have to do what is best for me.”

According to an AL.com report, Liner visited Alabama this past weekend and will no longer consider Auburn. He said his decision had nothing to do with the visit to Alabama. He had been committed to Auburn since 2011.

Liner told Auburn Sports that he didn’t feel comfortable with the new coaching staff.

“I’ve been holding it in; I just had to get it off my shoulders,” he said.

Liner is rated as high as the nation’s No. 2 strongside defensive end by Rivals.com and the No. 10 defensive tackle by 247Sports.

He had two brushes law enforcement officials this past summer and also was suspended from the Muscle Shoals team for a preseason game and also the season opener against Rogers. He recently was named first team all-state in Class 5A by the Alabama Sports Writers Association.
