Rogersville voters pass liquor sales
By Tom Smith

ROGERSVILLE — It took two citywide votes, but Rogersville residents have chosen to allow the sale of liquor inside the city limits.

The referendum passed 290-213 on Tuesday. In 2010, the wet-dry referendum failed by a single vote.

"I didn't have a good feeling about it the last time," said Joe Warren, owner of Warren's BP on U.S. 72 and a supporter of the issue. "This time I had a good feeling, especially from the talk I was hearing."

Proponents of the referendum said Rogersville was losing tax revenue as a result of liquor being sold in nearby entities such as Athens, Florence, Colbert County, Town Creek, Moulton and Tennessee cities.

Joe Wheeler State Park now sells alcohol as a result of a resolution passed during 2011's state Legislature session.
