Runoff election results certified

FLORENCE — In a brief meeting Monday, the City Council gave formal approval to the Oct. 9 runoff for the District 5 council seat by declaring the vote totals accurate and issuing a certificate of election to winner Blake Edwards.

Though a formality, it signaled the penultimate meeting under the current administration.

Today’s council meeting, which begins at 5 p.m. in the City Hall auditorium, will be the final gathering presided over by Mayor Bobby Irons and Council President James Barnhart, neither of who sought re-election. It will also be the final meeting for Councilman Sam Pendleton, who has served five consecutive terms. He, too, did not seek re-election.

The new council, in addition to Edwards, will include Dave Smith, who takes Pendleton’s District 1 seat, and Mayor-elect Mickey Haddock. They take office Nov. 5.
