HODGES — Several Vina school students received injuries this afternoon when the school bus they were traveling home in wrecked and flipped on its side in rural Franklin County.
The accident happened around 3:30 p.m. today at Alabama 172 and Overton Farm Road. The intersection is between Hodges and Vina, in the southwestern part of Franklin County.
Twenty-nine students were on the bus; 12 students were taken to medical facilities in Tupelo, Miss., Birmingham, Russellville, Red Bay and Hamilton.
All students received medical attention at the scene from paramedics before they were transported or before they were released to family members. The students vary in ages from kindergarten to 15 years old, according to emergency personnel at the scene.
Authorities said the school bus was attempting to turn left onto Overton Farm Road when it was struck on its right back tire by a pick-up truck traveling west on Alabama 172.
The truck driver was flown to a hospital in Tupelo for medical treatment, authorities said.
None of the students appear to have life-threatening injuries. Authorities said student injuries include broken bones, cuts and scratches.
