Sheffield OKs liquor license

SHEFFIELD — City Council members Monday unanimously approved a lounge retail liquor license for a local nightclub, pending an inspection by the city’s fire marshal.

Dana Glass, one of the owners of JD’s Bar and Grill at 215 Nashville Ave., said the club is seeking to change from a restaurant liquor license to a lounge license, based on the type of entertainment it offers.

Mayor Ian Sanford indicated that the appropriate departments had signed off on the license, except the fire marshal.

The council also approved a $500 donation to the local Fraternal Order of Police, which will produce a T-shirt that will be sold to raise money for Special Olympics of the Shoals.

Kirk Jones, a former Sheffield police captain and FOP representative, said 100 percent of the profits from the shirt go to Special Olympics. The shirt will feature the city’s logo, along with the logos of other donors.

The council also heard a presentation from Claudia Elston, who is in the beginning stages of forming an intervention program for young women ages 18-21 who have drug and alcohol addiction problems.

Elston asked the council if they could provide a building where she can operate “A Way Out Day Program.”

In other business, the council approved the installation of a new street light on 12 1/2 Street, and announced that the mayor and all council members will attend the League of Municipalities meeting May 18-21.
