FLORENCE — A Sheffield man has been indicted for rape, officials said.

Authorities said Christopher Ted Mathis, 40, Regal Inn Room 135, Sheffield, was indicted for first-degree rape during the January Lauderdale County Grand Jury session.

Police said the rape was supposed to have happened April 22 and was reported the next day.

Police said the victim is a 26-year-old Florence woman who knew Mathis.

The rape is supposed to have taken place at the woman’s residence in Carver Heights.

First-degree rape is a Class A felony and is punishable by 10-years to life in prison if convicted.

Mathis is being held in the Lauderdale County Detention Center on bail totaling $50,000
