TROY — Former Florence standout Shawn Southward will have an opportunity to showcase his skills for NFL scouts when he plays in the 2013 Casino Del Sol College All-State Game on Jan. 11.
Southward, who just completed his senior season at Troy, was one of two Trojans selected for the game, along with senior offensive lineman Cody Woodiel.
Southward became the seventh player in Troy history to top the 1,000-yard rushing mark in a season after he finished with 1,012 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2012. He averaged 5.2 yards per carry and 84.3 yards rushing per game.
He set a career-high in the season opener against UAB, rushing for 204 yards on 28 carries and scoring three touchdowns. He also topped the 100-yard mark in his final game, rushing for 116 yards on 16 carries against Middle Tennessee.
During his four seasons at Troy, Southward had 33 rushing touchdowns, which was just one shy of the school record, and topped the 100-yard mark four times on the year, the most by a Troy player since 2004.
Southward finished his career as the only player in Troy history to lead the Trojans in rushing in four straight years. He accumulated 2,793 rushing yards over his Trojan career and was named to the All-Sun Belt Second Team this past season.
The CDS All-Star Game will be broadcast live on ESPN3 and WatchESPN.com from Kino Stadium. Last year’s inaugural game featured six NFL draft picks and 61 other players who received invitations to NFL training camps.
Southward and Woodiel are the third and fourth Trojans selected to postseason all-star games this year. Linebacker Kanorris Davis and offensive lineman Kyle Wilborn were invited to play in the Raycom College Football All-Star Classic in Montgomery on Jan. 19.
