Testimony to begin today in manslaughter case

FLORENCE — The manslaughter trial of a Tuscumbia man who authorities said caused the death of a Lauderdale County man in a 2011 traffic accident begins today.

Courthouse officials said testimony in the trial of Richard Ray Russell, 33, begins at 9 a.m. today in Lauderdale County Circuit Judge Gil Self's courtroom.

Russell is accused of driving a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix that ran into the back of a 2008 Chevrolet truck.

James Thomas Campbell, 57, of Rogersville, the driver of the truck, was killed in the cash that happened Jan. 15, 2011, on U.S. 72 near Elgin.

Russell was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, officials said.

The collision, according to state troopers, caused the truck to leave the road and roll over several times.
