A strong cold front moving through the Shoals today has downed trees and produced hail and heavy rainfall.
Colbert County authorities said they are fielding reports of downed trees from near the Alabama-Mississippi state line to the Brick-Hatton community in the northeastern part of the county.
The Colbert County Emergency Management Agency measured wind gusts at 39 mph and received unconfirmed reports of winds approaching 50 mph, authorities said. Hail covered the ground on Hawk Pride Mountain, officials said.
Among the trees downed was one at Sheffield City Hall, which partially blocked one street.
In Lauderdale County, there initially were no reports of no major damage, but street flooding and dime-size hail were reported near Chisholm Road and the Seven Points areas in Florence, EMA Director George Grabryan said.
Pea-size hail was reported on Cox Creek Parkway and in downtown Florence, Grabryan said.
Florence firefighters responded to a possible lightning strike at Polynesian Village around 2 p.m., but initially reported no fire showing upon arriving at the scene, Grabryan said.
The National Weather Service this morning issued a severe thunderstorm watch until 3 p.m. but later extended it until 9 p.m.
