BIRMINGHAM -- University of North Alabama junior defensive back Caleb Massey has been named the Gulf South Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Lions' 21-16 road win over Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Massey is UNA’s third Defensive Player of the Week recipient this season.
Massey had a team-best 13 total tackles, including six solo stops, and broke up one pass attempt.
He also intercepted a Javelina pass late in the third quarter that he returned 93 yards for a touchdown and what would prove to be the winning score. The interception return was the longest in school history, breaking the mark of 90 by Lyle Underwood against Middle Tennessee State in 1959.
Massey ranks among the national leaders in Division II with four interceptions this season and he is UNA's second leading tackler with 56 stops this season.
UNA is 5-1 overall and hosts Valdosta State on Saturday at Braly Stadium.
