VP Biden to attend Selma's Bridge Crossing Jubilee
By Phillip Rawls
Associated Press

SELMA, Ala. — Vice President Joe Biden and more than 20 members of the U.S. House and Senate are scheduled to participate in Selma's Bridge Crossing Jubilee.

The annual event Sunday commemorates the beating of voting rights marchers on "Bloody Sunday" in 1965 as they began a voting rights march from Selma to Montgomery. The march prompted Congress to pass the Voting Rights Act, which opened Southern polling places to millions of African-Americans.

One of the jubilee organizers, state Sen. Hank Sanders of Selma, said this year's event has special significance because the U.S. Supreme Court is considering a challenge to part of the Voting Rights Act. That challenge was brought by Shelby County, but it could affect all states covered by the Voting Rights Act. A ruling is expected by late June.
