Voter turnout appears fairly brisk thus for Tuscumbia's mayoral runoff, while it is fairly light in the Florence City Council District 5 race, polling officials said.
Tuscumbia has the only mayoral runoff in the Shoals' four major cities.
Bill Shoemaker is shooting for his third straight term. He faces Fire Chief David Cole. Shoemaker receivd 47.6 percent of the votes in the Aug. 28 three-candidate election, while Cole had 28 percent.
The good turnout is somewhat surprising, considering it has been a quiet mayoral race.
"It's not as slow as I'd anticipated," said City Clerk Joann Armstead. "I don't know the numbers, but it looks like we're having pretty good turnout."
In Florence, morning turnout for the District 5 City Council race has seen small numbers, compared to the usual good turnout in the district.
Coy Bramlett and Blake Edwards are vying for the spot that will be vacated by council President James Barnhart. Edwards received 43.5 percent of the votes in August, compared to 36.6 percent for Bramlett in the four-candidate race.
