FLORENCE — A local woman is in jail after authorities said she used fake checks to withdraw $3,000 in cash from an account.

Brogan Calli Johnson, 21, 510 N. Broadway St., Florence, is charged with first-degree theft of property and unlawful possession of a controlled substance, officials said.

Florence police detective Drew Harless said the additional drug charge was added when officers found prescription pills in her possession at the time of her arrest.

Harless said Johnson was getting fake checks from the Internet and then depositing them into an account.

“She deposited more than $5,000 during a four-day period in October,” Harless said. “She was able to withdraw $3,000 in cash before the bank discovered the checks were worthless.”

Johnson is being held in the Lauderdale County Detention Center.
